Hey Cindy and anyone else who might know,
I am looking for a good big game rifle. I have looked around and received several opinions from different sources. I have always heard good things about the 7mm Mag and that is what I was thinking about going with. I have also been pointed to the 30-06. However, I am looking to keep my cost down but I want to have an effective, reliable and accurate rifle.
Here is my goal. I want to purchase a good rifle and get it set up with a nice scope and what not. Then I am going to practice with it for a while to get used to it. Eventually I would like to take it out on an Elk hunt since i have never been Elk hunting before.
In short, I will take any and all suggestions since I am not very well educated on the high power rifle side of things.

Hey Eric! The 7 mag and the 30-06 are very good choices for elk hunting. Anything bigger, in my opinon, is over kill. It is important to be very familar with the rifle. Spend a lot of time at the range. You usually can find a good deal on guns at local pawn shops. Otherwise, check the paper.

Sorry I didnt see your post Eric, for some reason some posts are not showing up till someone else answers them. Oh well.
I really like the 30-06 its big enough for elk and moose and yet versatile enough for mule deer as well. Greg and my son both have 300 mags and they really like them as well, they call them "ma bell"...hahaha...as it reaches out and touches. I have seen them make some awsome shots that I wouldnt attempt with my 30-06, Greg and Nate both have theirs fine tuned in for 500-600 yd shots. And it dont seem to do anymore damage than the 30-06, a lot of that also depends on the load and bullet you choose. We reload all of ours. The 300 is a little big for me, backs me up pretty good. We have shot a lot of elk and deer with the 270 as well. But over the last 8-10 years we have been hunting elk, deer, and bear with a 54 caliber inline muzzle loaders, when there are leftover tags or additional tags for elk we will hunt both seasons, blackpowder and rifle, but that dont happen very often.
Talking about hunting sure makes the fever start! Should be getting hunting application brochures by first of March and due by first week in April. There was talk they was going to make all elk licenses for the areas around here by application only, and cut back the amount of tags available for each unit and season. Not sure if that was for this year or propasal for sometime in the future.
Let us know what rifle you decide on Eric. Maybe when we all get together we can do some target practice. Have you ever shot a blackpowder rifle?
If you do go to pawn shops make sure of your rifle, sometimes people get rid of their rifles that they have burned the barrels out of. Wish you luck on finding what you are looking for!

Okay, I looked into the Savage, Weatherby, Browning, Ruger and Remington 300 mags. There are so many different models and they have a HUGE price difference between them all. Any where from $330 to $780! I have no idea what model is better than the other. I have always been partial to the Ruger but I don't want a poor quality rifle. If it is one of those deals that you get what you pay for then I don't want to go cheap. However if the $300 dollar rifle does just was well as the $700 rifle then I don't see why I should pay more. Any thoughts on this?? Good, bad or otherwise are all welcome. Eric

Good morning Eric,
Greg and Nate's 300 mags are both Ruger model 77's, Nates 300 used to be his uncles but when his uncle broke the stock he said we could have it if we wanted to put a new stock on it, so we bought a black synthetic stock and a Bushnell 3-9x scope and gave it to Nate for his b-day several years ago, was the best gift he has ever gotten, has put down several deer, elk and 2 bears with it. Greg has a Redfield 3-9x scope on his.

A friend of mine had a Browning A Bolt in a 300 mag. I'll see if he still wants to sell. Ed Sounds good Ed. I have been talking to a guy at work about the 300 Mag and he showed me some articles on the Rem Short Ultra Mag and it seems like a pretty sweet and versitile gun. Let me know if your buddy is still selling his and how much he wants for it. Eric

No worries man! Thanks for checking on it. Wal-Mart seems to have a pretty good selection of rifles and they can special order just about anything you want. They also seem to be pretty reasonable on price. I might have to treat myself to something nice when I get my tax return!! ;D

It's been a really long time since I have been on here but just to give an update I ended getting the Savage .30-06 and just love it! I took it hunting for antelope in WY, deer hunting in WY and elk hunting in Gunnison. Never got to harvest anything with it but it did great at the range!! ;D Hopefully this year I will actually be able to fire it in the field.
