I got my new Cass Creek perditor call last week and I've been excited to try it out! Also got a new .243 but it's not ready for hunting yet. After I had gotten all my chores done, I was off to the hills for some hunting. I decided to hunt a pice of public land between the Air Force Academy and Rampart Reservoir. I've hunted elk in this area last year and remembered I had heard coyote's in the evening. So I thought I'd give it a try armed with a .22 mag and a 9mm pistol.....I could see off in the distance Rampart Res. I would guess it was about 1.5 miles away. I decided to head that way from where I parked my Jeep. There was a little bit of fresh snow on the ground still from yestardays small snow storm. I walked a few hundered yards and sat by an up rooted pine tree. Couldn't help notice on how quite it was, not a sound from a bird or squirl. I sat there for about five min. I decided to try the "Jack Rabbit" call on my electronic call. The sound that came out of the call made me flinch. "Wow, that sounded way differant then when I was in the house!" LOL! I couldn't help but laugh at myself. I pushed it again and waited for about 10 min.....nothing. I got up and head down the gultch. Came across some big snow covered boulders that I need to get over. Once on top of them, I thought to myself on how great it was to be in the mountains again......then it happened! Whoooosh! Next thing I know, I'm on my back, feet in the air with bright blue sky in the back ground. Sliding down the boulder cussing the whole way down at Mother Nature. Once at the bottom, I turned around quikely to catch my rife that followed me down. A quick inspection showed little damage to my gun. Couldn't help to think that I was out here alone and no one knows where I am. If I break a leg or something, I'm screwed! I continued down the gultch stopping every once in awhile to call. I was alittle surprised that in some areas the snow depths were about three feet deep. More snow up here than I would have guessed. I also was surprised that I hadn't seen any animal tracks......not a one. Up ahead I could see the bright refection of the sun as it hit the ice covered Rampart Res. I climbed up the snow covered hill to get a better view of the reseroir. The hill was like a pouder surger covered glazed dounut! Never made it to the top, got tired of slipping. The sun is now setting and I better head back to the Jeep. Again, on the way back, I stopped every once and awhile to call. Still nothing. The way back was quite uneventful. I paid close attention to avoid that ice covered boulder! Once back at the Jeep I refected back on the days hunt. Although I didn't see anything, I really enjoyed myself. I reached into the back of my Jeep to retrieve a cold Bud. I waited until the sun was just about gone and I picked up my game call again. I pushed the "Coyote Howl" to see if anything would respond......nothing. I try again.....nothing. Guess all the coyotes have moved to Tucson until the Spring thaw. Tomorrow I'll try out on the prairie to see what I can call in.
