PUEBLO, COThe Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) announced last week that chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been confirmed in deer in two new areas of Colorado: one approximately 15 miles north of Burlington and another 15 miles west of Pueblo. The announcement comes just weeks after CWD was confirmed for the first time in Colorado's Arikaree River basin where in September, DOW wildlife officials confirmed the first known case of the disease there in a wild moose.
The Pueblo-area deer died after being hit by a car this past fall, and the deer near Burlington was reported to the DOW by a local homeowner who saw it stumbling around on his property. Wildlife officials shot and killed the sick animal, and tests recently confirmed both deer were infected with CWD.
