Yup, it's Official! Sunday, Feb. 27th. Was my Last Day as a Construction Laborer! It was a Wonderful, Sunny Sunday and I am Eternally Thankful to my Lord and Savior for getting me thru a long and prosperous Career!
The company kept me for one last day and paid me very generously, Sundays are Double Time days . Plus they threw a Huge Retirement Party for me, complete with cake, balloons and some really neat gifts.
During the slack time of the day I was able to sit in the sun and reflect upon days gone by. A story popped into my head, so I just had to write it down and dedicate it to my Dad; who was also a retired Laborer.
I hope that you enjoy it:
The Hard Hat
If you think about it, the hard hat plays a Big part in our lives as Trades People.
When we first join the trades, we are so happy and excited to put on our hard hats. We all know that when we have that hat on, we are making a good wage and future for ourselves and our families.
As the years go buy, we begin to cuss that lowly hard hat, because we know that it represents another day of work. Rainy, snowy, windy or just plain nasty days are the days that we really dread dawning the old hard hat.
Later, we start to appreciate putting on our hard hats as we realize Retirement is just another day closer. The days slip by quicker and quicker; until suddenly we are putting that hard hat on for the Last Time.
It’s a Bittersweet time in our lives. We are leaving old friends, our Union Brothers and Sisters; our Trade and a Large Piece of our life to venture into the unknown. We also believe that we are finally leaving that pesky hard hat behind.
It’s Not So My Friend!
That hard hat has become a part of our person.
It stands as a symbol of our values, our lives, our hopes and our dreams.
It has virtually imbedded itself into the core of our fiber.
Years down the road, we will again be putting on our trusted old hard hat as we are dispatched to that great project in heaven. We will all gladly pick up our tools to join our departed friends, loved ones and Union Brothers and Sisters so that we can work for The Greatest Boss that we will ever have.
The pay and benefits will be better than we ever dreamed. We will all be more than happy to once again dawn the Old Hard Hat!

Dedicated to my Dad on the day of my own Retirement from the Laborers, may we both someday, be wearing our hard hats and working side by side together in Heaven! I love you and I miss you!
