The DOW has posted the draw results for elk. Once again I was unsuccessful for my elk draw. Looks like I'll be camping out again outside the DOW office for the left over tags. Don't understand why it is soooo difficult to get a elk tag in this state! Ed wildlife.state.co.us/index.asp

Good morning Ed,
I think it depends on what unit you put in for. Greg, Nate and I drew out our muzzle loader tags for elk, we do almost every year. Greg drew out a cow, Nate and I drew out our bull tags. Our tags are for statewide except for a few units that you have to draw out for seperately. Greg also drew out his bear tag. Still waiting to see what we draw out for deer, which should post today sometime. Do you put in for a unit that is considered trophy unit?
I also put in for a moose tag but didnt draw out, didnt figure I would as this is first year I have applied, will be 3-4 years wait for a cow moose tag and 6-7 for the bull I have been told.
How many preference points you have for elk?, and what unit?

I always put in for a trophy unit for first choice. This year I put in for unit 851 for first choice. Then I put in for unit 76, 86 and 59. I now have two elk points. I hope I get my deer tag, last year I didn't get that either.

Deer results came out yesterday. I drew out my buck and Greg and Nate drew out doe tags all for unit 43(combined unit tag for 43, 47, 471). We dont hunt trophy units, to long to wait to draw out, besides the horns dont make for very good stew And every now and then even in these units we hunt we see or bag a nice bull like Greg got last year. Guess it just depends on what you want. Cindy

Greg was telling me tonight that one of the guys at the shop has 11 preference points or should I say 3 preference and 8 weighted pointes for unit 76...its a hard unit to get elk tags for.
Sorry to hear you didnt draw out your deer tags either.

What are "weighted points". Never heard of them. I have friends that hunted 76 for the first time last year and they all got one (four guys). So far, none of them got one this year for that unit. It seems to me that it is very difficult to hunt the same unit year after year. Guess I'll have to start scouting this whole state since I'll never know were I'll be hunting.....if at all!

Hey Ed,
I had to do some research on these points. In the brochure it mentions preference points, and explains how they are used. Somewhere I read a while back that DOW was discussing these and that a person can accrue 3 or 4 preference points then after that they accumulate weighted points, so you could have 3 preferemce and 4 weighted points after 7 years of unsuccessfull draws. I dont know the difference, sounds silly to me, why not just call them all preference. I know that for moose draws after 3 preference points then you accumulate weighted points, once you draw your first choice all points are erased. Not sure if DOW is using same point system for elk or deer. To me it all means the same no matter what the points are called.

Cindy, Do you or Greg know much about the San Luis Valley Damage Elk Hunt (CO. Big Game Regs book pg.8)?

Hey Ed,
We dont know anything about the damage hunt in San Luis Valley. I do know they are not run the way I think they should be. Last year a rancher here obtained several licsenses for deer so he could distribute them to hunters, he could charge what he wanted for them which I dont agree with for he also gets compensated for the damage the deer have done to his crops, why should he be able to charge more for these licsenses, he approached Greg and told him he could have one for $100, since he knows Greg he was giving him a cut deal, not the $200-$300 he charged other hunters. Greg laughed and told him he wasnt interested. This was a rancher from here, whos son works with Greg. I feel these deer and elk belong to the people of Colorado, dont they? Is it not our dollars we spend on licenses that goes back into different programs for the wildlife in our state. Why should someone be able to make such a nice profit when they get compensated for the damage in the first place. These ranchers and farmers can also choose who they give the licenses to, and who gets permission to hunt on their property. I feel that DOW should still regulate this so who ever wants a damage tag gets one. Its our licsense dollars and tax dollars that pay the damage compensation so why is it right for the rancher to charge so much or say who can and cant hunt. The rancher north of here for several years recieved many licenses as the hundreds of elk just like this year migrate onto his hay fields during the winter. We tried several times to get a tag from him, but never got one.
If you find out more on this damage hunt in SL Valley let me know, interested in to see if it is opperated similar to what I see here. You could probably call the regional office closest to that area to find out more info.

Okay, I'll let you know what I find out. As far as I know for now, it is sponsored by the DOW. It not a "get rich" operation by a rancher.
