Anything about all birds we hunt.
I hunt pheasants, quail, doves, turkey, ducks, and geese.
I been hunting pheasants, quail and doves for many years. Took up turkey hunting 2 years ago and this year got into waterfowl. Really got hooked on the duck hunting, love to see them set the wings and float into the dekes. Cant wait till next season already. I plan to spring turkey hunt with bow this year.

I have never hunted turkeys. Once last year while bow hunting Whitetail deer from a treestand I had a flock of turkeys walk up to my stand. I tried to draw on one but was busted before I could draw. I would think it would be best to hunt from the ground from one of those tent things. I've seen guys do it on tv where they shoot right through a sceen! Total seclusion. I think it would be awesome!!

Yep, shoot through screen is a good way to hunt them. Not sure how I am going to try this, I dont have a blind like that.

Hi Paul!
Long time no chat. Hope all is cool in your world.
I've been thinking of getting into game birds. I have no idea where to start tho - Type of gun, types of loads, etc etc - Im as newbie as it comes to game birds so pointing me in the right direction would be a good start.
Thanx in advance

I would start a 870 Wingmaster 12 gage myself. You can find them in pawn shops everywhere for around $200. Loads will depend on what your hunting.

Sorry its been so long since I been around. I worked away from home for the summer but am back to working close to home.
For a good bird gun look at the Charles Daly auto. I have the 3" mag and really love the gun. Will work with even the game loads. I think they run about 350.00 for the black stock and 400.00 for camo stock.

A friend of mine used a Charles Daly last year and was quite happy with it. It was a camo pump 12 gage. Took down quite a few ducks with it. Hey Max, both guns mentioned so far can be found at Wal Mart. Go check them out! Ed

I shoot a Charles Daly 12 guage, camo. Was given to me fopr my b-day last year. I know Greg got it at WalMart for around $300. I got a few ducks and one goose last year with it. The drought here kept most of the migratory waterfowl away from the valley here last autumn.
The pacific flyway season started here yesterday, and of course we were in the field most of the day and this morning. Yesterday I was fairly confused and ready to ship the shotgun back to shop. Several times the firing pin was not making solid enough contact with primer to set it off, came home last night cleaned shotgun and same thing this morning. I was not happy!! But spent some time experimenting and found that when I would jack shell into chamber I would have to make sure to put outward preasure on pump while firing to set those shells off. We noticed that the pump action would slide forward just slightly when trigger was sqeezed. I am so used to pulling any firearm I shoot into my shoulder this is awkward but with practice I will learn to pull with my trigger hand and push with the pump hand. Last year and through any practice before this season we were using old shells we had accumulated over the last several years, never had the firing problem till we bought a box of Federal BB, 2 3/4" for this season for ducks. The older shells required less impact evidently. Greg explained to me why pushing outward on the pump makes the difference. Something to do with when trigger is pulled it performs two duties...one it releases firing pin...two, it releases latch that holds pump forward, evidently the process of the two is so closely timed and somehow pushing on the pump helps to keep the spring tight so firing pin has more impact on primer. If anyone else has an answer let us know. Or am I the only one with this problem. Maybe its just me...haha. We did get 2 mallards yesterday. Could have had a bag of mergansers but we dont like them. This is the second year for my black lab and he did great. He showed more patience, even when those mergansers were swimming less than 15 feet from us he kept his composer. But a mouse 2 feet from us was more than he could stand and after watching those mergansers for about 1 1/2 hours he was ready for some action...haha...poor mouse didnt have a chance.
Seems shooting the 3" mag for geese has no problems either, as havent had any missfires yet. Saw about 200 geese this morning but they wouldnt come into pond, not even close. But it has been a fun weekend. And had a great time. Always a great time when out hunting or fishing!

Hey Cindy! I think that there is something wrong with your gun. I would have a gunsmith look at it or take it back to the store. If you practice or get used to on how you need to shoot this gun, you will develop bad habbits that will transfer to your next gun.

I agree with Ed, the gun needs worked on. I think you would be able to send it to Charles Daly to get fixed for free. Maybe go to their website and either email them or get a phone number and call them to see what your options are.
